The subway train roared through the blackness like a ravenous serpent thunderously devouring its way through the city’s understructure. Eleven of us sat swaying slightly in our seats, a mixture of humanity, various sizes, shapes and colors. No one spoke, nor were there nods of greeting. We were strangers content to remain strangers.

Metal screamed against metal as we rounded a bend and slowed for the next station. Lights flew by and blurred faces peered in at us. Two passengers got up and moved toward the doors.

Three young men entered the car. They were sullen, and their eyes shifted furtively the length of the car. I turned away. I had never cared for such people. Tight pants, jackets with wild insignias, long hair, dirty complexions—I hated the whole act. I instinctively placed my arm around my little boy….
